How to Calculate Gross Pay from an Hourly Wage
Pay · Updated October 8, 2026
By Work Hours Desk editorial team. This guide is an educational calculation example, not a legal determination.
For 43 worked hours at $20 an hour with a simple 40-hour threshold and 1.5× overtime, regular pay is 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime pay is 3 × $30 = $90. Estimated gross pay is $890 before taxes or deductions.
What gross pay leaves out
Bonuses, multiple rates, differentials, paid leave and exemptions may change the calculation. The DOL regular-rate fact sheet explains why the overtime rate can differ from a simple base wage times 1.5.
Example at a glance
| Entered time or pay | Adjustment | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 43 hours × $20/hour | 40 regular + 3 at 1.5× | $890 estimated gross |
